I have been more relaxed the past few days and have had this idea for a while so did something about it. I used a 100mm length of 60mm OD pipe and cut a narrow V into it length ways so it was a bit narrower at the top, cut a heap of little "roots" and ground a concave on the tops of them, tacked them onto the bottom of the stump and started welding beads to form the bark. Finally I cut a 160mm circle from some maple and stained it before bolting it (from underneath) together.
It hasn't turned out how I imagined it ......... the roots are too symmetrical even though they are different sizes and some are bent sideways and the splinter bit on top doesn't look very good to me.
