Turbo Refurb Diy or not?

Hi people I need to refurb a Mitsi L200 turbo.
Is it a Diy job or better to send it off to a pro?

Refurb how? If you need to change a wheel it'll need balancing. If you are just changing a seal you might get away without.

it needs new seals, and a clean inside.

i use midlands turbo for all my turbo work. even changing a chra isn't as simple as fit and forget and i don't think the savings are worth it. plus warranty.

Just buy a new or refurbed cartridge (the main core), you could clean the housing yourself. Try find a Melett dealer and use a genuine Melett core

As above. I’ve changed a couple of cartridges in various cars. Last one I did was in the terrano two years ago. Think it was about £60. Not a difficult job at all.
The quality of the Chinese ones isn’t as good as genuine original garrett (that’s where they all come from, regardless of what the adverts may say) but for the money I’d happily throw a new cartridge in every couple of years. And to be honest, they’ve never given any issues.

Terrano is a vnt one too, slightly more complex but not difficult to do, just don’t lose any bits!

I got the turbo from a mate it is already missing a few bits!

Should show it a little better, nothing is actually bolted inside, everything just sort of “comes out”

Depends what bits are missing. As long as he’s not opened it up you should be ok

Edit, unless you want to take the nozzles out, there will be a couple of screws holding the assembly in place

not a problem..oven cleaner and as long as they move freely and have not worn the spindles too much then good to go. Don't strip the vanes as they can be very fiddly going back if your a 1st timer

I got this turbo from a friend its already apart any way, with the studs missing that hold the unit together and the half moon piece that connects the acuator rod to the veins

Oh yes also datum mark everything so it goes back the same orientation

Plus the bush that links the two. You can get replacement nozzle rings, but looking at the price I bet for a little more you’d be able to get a whole turbo…

thats why it was free! its back together but he lost the half moon shim that sits in the arm, of and the studs that hold the 2 halfs togehter!
