Tyre changer

Morning all,i am about to embark on building a tyre changer,for the bead breaker most people use a very long lever that pushes onto a spade? via a downlink to break the bead,to save energy i was wondering if i could use an old sciscor jack i have laying around to provide the force to break the bead.
anyone tried this, did it work ?.

It would work but the problem you have with any kind of jacking they are slow. Bare in mind you may need to break the bead in 3 or 4 places per wheel. That equates to a lot of screwing !

I like the idea of that,as I struggle to break the bead with my tyre changer as I'm a lightweight. so I've just mocked this up

in principle it should work well, the "foot" that beaks the bead would need to be retained so it can only slide up and down, and the jack would need to be clamped or bolted in place.

It wouldn't be to difficult to make a pneumatic ram like like the ones on mainstream breakers. I can take some measurement from mine if you like. The body is made from a piece of roughly 4 inch diameter steel tube.

or weld an nut on the end of the screw for a scissor jack and you may be able to use a cordless screwdriver (my brother in law does this for the jacks on his caravan) or an impact gun.

Are those vertical pieces flat strip? They stand a chance of bending under compression, it would have been better to use channel, or weld some bracing in place.

Thanks for the answers guys,the jack has a nut so if i get bored with a long slow screw as Fazerruss put,s it,i can use the windy gun,the spade is just above the wheel and made of serious stuff,i have made it now so tommorow i shall get some rawlbolts, nail it to the concrete and report back.
the only reason i am making this is the non ability of 3 tyre shops to stop a slow leak round the valve....if you want something done properly, do it yourself !.

use a bottle jack in optimas place of build if not a clarke press can do the same if you build the bar to come a little

bright spark has both bead breaker and tyre lifter built into it

Hopefully i will never need to use this again once i cure the leak so just using odds and ends i have laying around so didnt want to spend too much money on it, it will prob be chopped up and turned into something else when it,s mission is done anyhow.
Brightsparks breaker is the buisness but for a once only job,this should do........hopefully

Oh well,that was a waste of sweat and swear words,had to take it to a tyre place in the end,told him about the leak and watched as he scrubbed tons of muck off the 27 year old rim
it was really stuck hard,bent the 2 inch angle i used for the base,the machine at the garage made an almighty bang as it let go so so i doubt i would have ever got it off on my own.

i use either a big vice or the fly press, both seem to work just fine!!

my "big" vice isnt big enough,anyhow it,s job done now and not loosing pressure so......until next time :-)
