Uneven concrete floor

We’re having some vinyl put down in the bathroom & cloakroom but the floors in both are uneven due to boarding in which the pipe work runs.



The board sits about 3 or 4 mm below the concrete which is enough to cause a problem.

What’s the best way to level this out?

Lay hardboard over the whole lot (my least favourite choice) or just use some levelling compound where it’s needed?

If I go down the compound route, what’s the best stuff for the job?

lay 4mm hardboard first

then a whole board cut around the toilet fill in at the back

as its pipe work id not like to cover it over so you cant get at it how about buying thicker wood so it just proud of the edges and use a plane and sander so it level

or as above lay board then board over again

i did in my bathroom as there where a few gaps over the floor lay hard fiber board and over that layed lino over thetop and masticed round the bath and toilet as normal fine for 7 years you could add the 4mm as above and put fiber board over

Surely just lift the plywood and pack it out so it's flush with the floor...or am I misunderstanding?

hard board or ply the screed the joins and feather it.
Screeded my mates bathrrom/dressing room last night actually.

Not particularly, although I’m hoping the small amount involved should help to keep things together once the vinyl is down.

I'd pull it and replace the nails with screws regardless...I can't stand squeaky floors....drive me nuts! My whole living room was pulled up and then screwed back down because of squeaks.

Under the ply I reckon there will be a bead nailed to the side of the shuttering...either pack out or move the bead so the ply is flush with the floor....screw the ply back down and then seal the joints with mastic so you don't get lines in the vinyl.

Putting a very thin layer over the ply is asking for problems I think.

That’s a good suggestion , but having looked at it more closely it varies from flush to under flush.

so its more the wood is level its the concrete thats not

use one of these to level the concrete

you wont like me very much if you try but its quite quick but the mess is hurendus but does work if its slightly out

fill the depression... i assume its timber? so actually something like gripfill applied in blobs under the ply overlay would work fine.

overlay ideally 10mm ply, 12 better 6 if you must... do not use hardboard it is crap., screwed at 150mm centres, best wbp ply not shuttering

I tend not to mess with floor height...it causes all sorts of problems I find....like a lip at the threshold for example.

If you need to raise the wood maybe look at wood tile adhesive...that dries with some flex in it and is designed to stick to wood.

It’s still crap on timber and flexible surfaces that move differentially

Yes.

Thankfully no issues with that.
