unusual measuring guage

Whilst collecting my "new" milling machine tonight from my mate Peter, he showed me an interesting looking measuring guage he obtained from a workshop clearance.

it is a German made item, but we couldnt work out the name and have no clue as to what it would be used to measure. We thought maybe sheet metal but not 100% convinced.

Any ideas on what its proper name is and what it would be used for would be appreciated.

They arent difficult to make....we used to make them from bits available in a catalogue....which one I cant remember....the bits cost not much.

He gets them off the Autosmart van, no idea what brand they are but they look pretty decent and he said they were cheaper than the Tiger glove brand.
