Upvc door locks

One of those things I didn't realise I knew nothing about!
I need to change the locks on my house, front door is fine, I fitted those. Just the yale will do.

Back door is some cheap upvc effort.
Has this kind of lock.

I've got as far as working out it's a euro cylinder, but are they universal? Can I just go to s rewfix and buy whatever euro cylinder and it will fit?

I guess I just remove the 2 screws and all will be self explanatory. I'm sure there is plenty of info online about changing them.

Just didn't know if they are fully interchangeable.

Turn let about 30 degrees (could be either way) while pulling out

Yes universal but they are different lengths overall and either side of the latch so really need to remove and measure

Might have to settle for taking a diagram, but yes, I'll take it out and have a look first.

Just make sure you measure from the centre of the securing screw hole in the body, to either end of the lock, some are asymmetrical….

One more thing, you can buy these locks with a knob on the ‘inside’.
Saves having to lock it from the inside with a key…daughter’s house insurers stipulated they had to change theirs from the key type to knob, so that there’s no need to scramble looking for keys to unlock the door in case of a fire…makes sense to me…

That's a good idea.
If I'm in, I normally leave my keys in the back door, but might try that instead.

Edit, that does mean if anyone gets in, it's easy for them to unlock the back door though.
Although they would just kick it through anyway.

Thats not the way the insurers would see it…imho.


Accessing keys left in the lock or a knob in place of would require either forcing the door or breaking glass….it’s still breaking and entering..

I mean if they got in through a window, they can easily open back door to walk out with stuff.

Front door would be dead locked, so they would have to kick one of the doors through or go back out a window.

With a knob, they can just open the door from the inside. But, as I say, they would just kick it through.

You have to tap it with a hammer to pop it out , cost about £150 to learn that

I see what you are saying, my take on it would be to ask my insurers on what their thoughts would be on lock selection

They didn't specify anything when I took out the policy 12 years ago.
It doesn't get locked a huge amount anyway, though probably will do now.
I'm not worried about crime, just easier to change the locks than go through the stress of getting keys back

if you gor a calipers at home you can measure with out removing

If it sticks out a bit in the inside of the house it's not a worry and even helpfull as thr thumb turn is away from the door a bit

And if you struggle removing the euro lock part loosen the screws for the handle a few turns that always helps

I'm warming to the thumb turn thing.

My precious concerns are just trapping intruders in the house. Surely I'd want them out as quickly as possible anyway, and preferably without adding needing a new door to the problems.

thumb turns realy help them as if your out they break in (through window etc )

once in they can open the door to remove your tv as they dont have to get out the widow they come in so easyer to get out

but for the ease of going to your door when people come and you dont have to find your key or in the case of fire you can get out i cant see why they are not a standard item

some manufacturers measure differently and give you 3 numbers for a cylinder.
They give 10mm as the middle number............the width of the locking/turning bit.

Makes it confusing.

I'm just changing house cylinders and have gone for thumb turn inside and keyed alike + garage/shed

jolly decent of you to let the burglars out easily with your gear if u get any proper locks on my doors they would have to get out of the rear window if they leave

I live in a new build…( well it’s 6 yrs old now….) and it has the turn button on the front door…rear access is via French doors which have a conventional key lock style….
