urgent help please!!!

i am on a site tomorrow where some one is going to be gas welding as im going to be about 5 feet are sun glasses ok to use as a non welder i don't have googles and i won't use them again so there is no point in getting then should i keep away from it

Hi James, so long as you aren't sitting on him (her?) while he's gas welding you should be okay using sunglasses. If it's a job that chucks out lots of sparks at five feet away you might be advised to wear a pair of safety goggles over the sunglasses, and maybe gloves and jacket if you aren't wearing them already.

ok thanks im just more concerned about the intense light from the flame? and i the welder is a man so i won't be sitting on him

Oxy acetyleen welding then no problems. MIG/MAG welding with gas then a proper screen or turn your back on the welding.

it is oxy welding so it should be ok then?

Yes, although the torch flame is bright it is nothing like an electric arc, and the radiation give off is much milder than arc radiation. But be prepared to cover up against sparks, they even get in your shoes, so boots with jeans/overalls over the top are advised.

Compared to an electric arc, the uv and infra red emissions of oxy fuel processes are very low, if you are not required to look directly at the welding then gas welding goggles should not be required, however there are other hazards, a backfire (different to a flashback) may produce a shower of sparks, and depending on the material, millscale, rust and other dirt can jump off and fly around, so it makes sense to wear a proper pair of safety specs, not sunglasses, if you were under my care I would issue them and insist on them being used.

ok thanks will there be sparks even tho the welder isn't putting filler into the joint the steel has been painted with red oxide paint

Hi and some advice

Hi I'm a newbie here and have a lot of experience in welding with experience in Mig,Stick and Gas welding. If you are'nt directly observing the operation you should be O.k .But you really should wear safety googles as if a stray spark hits you in the eye or face you'll know about it.
I have had this happen as an apprentice HGV/Diesel fitter many years back also wear an old hat as well as a stray spark hitting you on the head may cause singeing.
We also used to wear rigger boots if we were doing a lot of welding like semi trailer refits and mods the reason being they were quicker to slip off if a stray spark went down your boot than lace up boots.
