Used compressor - replace valve plate?

Hi.

I am chuffed with a recent purchase of a 3HP Abac compressor - 150 litre receiver, 12 cfm - for £50. It is scruffy and I shall strip and rebuild it.

I have asked Abac for quotes for service packs and they offer kits of gaskets with and without valve plates. Now I am not a man of great wealth and would rather not stump up the extra £90 or £100 if it's not necessary.

My question is how can I tell whether or not I need to replace the valve plate? Will it be obvious on strip down?

Any advice on this and the refurb in general would be appreciated.

Does it work, why strip and rebuild it ? If it ain't broke don't fix it but if you are going to do the job you may as well do it right and fit the lot while it's in bits.

Sorry. I should have said. The guy I bought it from told me that it needs a 'head gasket' (valve plate gasket) replacing. So at the very least, it needs that doing.

Plus it is rusty in places and, whilst surface rust, I would rather treat it and kill it to preserve the unit than leave it to get deep enough to affect the air receiver.

If you can get the valve plates to polish up they should be OK. They'll be a bit crusty with burnt oil.

i soa.k plate in thinners over night.cleans all the crap off
