Using a chain lift to pull tree roots out. (Pics)

I have an area of the garden that I wanted to plant in, but being located underneath a tree it is difficult to grow plants there.

I dug down to some of the large roots with spade & pick, then sawed through the root. I then drilled a hole through the side of the large root to thread my rope. One steady click at a time, and the chain lift worked quite well. Most of the root was much lower down in the soil than where I had dug down to.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that has used this sort of equipment for something unconventional.

What's holding the tree up now you've taken the main root out ? Get the chainsaw out and take the lot down

The tree (holly) has 6 trunks. Not sure how or why. However, I feel confident that there will be many more large roots under the tree anchoring it down.

By the way, I pulled that root out at least two years ago. It’s still very healthy and sturdy. I’ll get a recent photo this week and upload it.

Holly will live forever, I just like cutting stuff down with the chainsaw

I've used a Hi Lift jack to pull trees and some shrubs out on two occasions. Not huge trees of course, but about 8" diameter. It worked well.

I've used a block and tackle to pull out trees, you just need a bigger tree near enough to anchor to. Fasten higher up on the one you want to pull out and low down on the anchor tree and winch away. Saves a lot of digging and blunting your chainsaw trying to cut through the roots whilst they are surrounded by soil.

I've used a Hi-lift too, or if I can get access, used the winch on the front of the Landy, just pressing a button sure beats manual labour

just done some work for a mate and he came round and ripped a load of tree roots out with a mini digger only took an hour

In the old days they had monkey winches and monkey jacks, similar sort of arrangement

I have used a leaver block to pull stumps out, if you cut them off high you can use the stump as a lever to pull the roots out, easy if you have a good axe!

I use a grubbing mattock and two grown up sons (cheap labour)
Pulled out a 40ft length of 12ft high leylandii trees in about 2 hours.

Burnt a couple out at home before building the deck. Still a bit of work, dug out around the roots and under the stump, loaded it up with coal and let them burn for a couple of days.

I actually put the job off for ages with my wife bugging me to chop down the trees. Then I come home one day and my wife and our 70+ neighbour are cutting the trees down. Bob is up the tree with a chainsaw and my wife is holding a rope down the bottom. My wife had sweet talked Bob into helping her knowing too well when I got home I'd have to take over and finish the job. Fair to say I had no option but to take over and cut the trees down.
