using jotun 2k epoxy marine primer on car

hi folks, i called my local paint suppliers to order some epoxy primer for respraying my rav4. they told me they could do jotun 2k epoxy primer for 30 quid for 4 litres with thinners. they sent me jotun 2k marine epoxy primer with epoxy thinner. the paint is designed for marine use and is apparantly very resistant to water etc. my idea was to use this then alow to dry for a couple days, then key the surface and shoot it with a couple coats of 2k high build primer followed by basecoat. if its good under salt water then urely it will be brilliant on a car body. has anyone used this paint on a car before or should i send it back. here is the paint they sent me

Varies where you go but i pay £15 per litre and the same for hardener. I have it mixed to the colour i need.

used the primer today and it clogged up my gun big time, its was extremly thick, even when thinned down alot it still did not flow nice. think ill order some lechlar

From comments made on here before by others I think that Jotun is like Epoxy Mastic sold by Rustbuster. I use that as a brush on paint on the underside of my car and inside on the floors. I would not use it where I want a quality finish. Normal epoxy primer like lechlar would be better then.

That is not the one for steel anyway. I used the Jotamastic (for steel) and found it to be very good. It did take some thinning, but when I got it right it went on very well indeed. I then shot the Lechlar Hi build over the top of the epoxy followed by the topcoat.

The gun was a "smart repair" gun I bought from a show. As itnwas the first time I had used the gun, I ran some thinners through it first, to clean it and test the fan etc. all seemed OK so put the paint in. It gave me a very fine mist, then petered out to nothing, so did all the usual things. Still couldn't get it to spray so gave up and brushed the quantity left onto the body. Not good! It didn't flow out well and it will take some sanding to sort out the mess.

The gun got cleaned out and closely examined. It was then I realised that I have been sold a detail gun with a 0.8 air cap. No wonder it wouldn't spray. It is the only gravity gun I have so I will have to wait now until I have enough repaired to do a few panels, otherwise the paint in the bottom of the suction cup just goes to waste.

Just get a cheap full sized gravity gun with 1.8 needle then you can still mix small amounts, or you can buy small pots to put inside suction guns for touch up repairs although never used them myself.

I use a 0.8 gun for engines & gearboxes, the Lechlar epoxy goes through it no problem at all.

Well that's very strange. I didn't want to thin it any more due to the spec sheet saying 10% thinners if required.

The gun happily sprays thinners but will not spray the epoxy primer, so I didn't think there was a fault, just that the paint was too thick.

Mini guns have smaller tip equivalents in relation to full size guns. 0.8mm is about 1.2mm full size equivalent.

Was it Jotamastic 80 or 87? Or Penguard HB? As the Jotamastic's are very thick and will need thinning a lot more than 10%, and Penguard HB about 25%.

JOTUN PENGUARD HB GRP/ALLOY EPOXY PRIMER PAINT 5L WHITE is the description. I was reluctant to thin it more than the 10% suggested in the data sheet, but I could do if it will not have any detrimental effect on the paint. I would prefer to use my small gun rather than get the 1L suction guns out. Interested to hear about these mini adapter cups too, I have never seen those before and might be a good thing to have in stock.

I never saw a recommendation of how much thinner to use, but the Jotun info is geared towards airless spraying which uses little to no thinner. 25% will be fine. Make sure you heed the 30 minutes induction time though.
