I chucked everything in this 6013 root 7018 nexus rods unknown rods everything I could get my hands on probably should of gas cut it better but what can u do ay
I have ran out of plate now sadly

I have to say I've seen better. Biggest issue is the inconsistency followed closely by lack of fusion at the edges of the welds. Have you tried a whip and pause vertical weave yet or a triangular overlapping weave pattern. Running straight up beads in the vertical position for anything other than a root run and maybe the hot pass tends to result in a piled up weld with little sidewall pen. Try a narrow 2.5x rod diameter weave with a distinct pause at each edge count 1000... Whip across the centre smartly...pause at other side, count 1000 then whip back again. Your welds will be flatter, hotter at the edges and less metal deposited in the centre. Takes a while and don't be afraid to travel fast accross the centre of the weld it should leave a really neat looking flat vertical with no hint of slag inclusion. Some rods make this much easier than others.

What size plate and rods are you running there?

I found that a reputable brand of 7018's (I have Lincoln Electric rods) will lay nice vertical stringer beads. I have 3.2mm rods and at around 80-90 amps and my stinger aiming just above 90degrees gives nice looking runs. For the initial root id use a 2.5mm and use a slight weave to fill the gap.

Hats off to you for posting these pics as im sure a lot of us wouldn't do the same for fear of ridicule but for me that is how you learn. Jodie from Welding Tricks and Tips and Chucke2009 on youtube are great teachers with great footage of how to lay beads in all positions in all welding methods.

As has been said, more info required, as in rod dia and, joint thickness, angle of prep, root gap and, root face.

I'm curious, why did you not go all the way with lo-hi's, did you bake lo-hi's prior to welding? Looking at root side, image, looks like joint has closed around middle area of joint. Face side profile, not too great, probably down to arc length, SOT. One other point regarding Nexus rods, my previous experience of this brand name, has not been a good one, they were hellish to burn. Maybe some errors are choice of rod, although I do understand you can only burn what is available to you.

If you pick up more matl, have a go with rutiles, all the way, see how you get on.

Me you dont get better without help and as I'm self taught wanna learn pipe but got to learn this open root thing first whip and pause like a 6010 or like a weave

I've got tonnes of metal its not exact I gas cut a angle preped it best I could and welded it I've only got what I got to use at the time

Dont even bother trying to weld open root if the prep isnt PERFECT
you will make no progress otherwise

Grind all flame cut edges to shiny metal. That'll help loads, have you mastered laying beads and pads in the flat position before attempting vertical up?

Its not exactly slumming it,but i just used a grinder to prep 10mm plate when i was learning it.
Whatever way you do it,even if it takes twice as long to prep as it does to weld,the gap and land has to be consistent

10 fil flat 3.2 6013 rod was a bit damp not my best but it ran alright.
I tried that whip and pause thing then held oneside then across held ect nexus 3.2lo highs I'm still unsure about this I thought everything had to be stringer welds no whip or weave

Ok I've read jims comment properly but u can only do that 1.5 times the rod diameter yeah that tee joint is no good I got a bin to do tomorrow so might get a chance in the morning I might have some fincords m left

Generally weaving is best avoided but on vertical joints it's good for a second pass, and at quite a width. Do it exactly like Jim says, hold at the edge, whip straight across over the root run to the other side and hold again (for what seems like a very long time) then straight back again.

One point to remember, is that the whole "whip and pause" technique doesnt really work with rutile or low hy rods. Far too prone to causing slag inclusions as well as other defects.

I found that out mate everything is a learning curve but I under stand more then yesterday I think my old man cleared the yard to day so no plate left and I cant grind at home due to noise and I don't have a transformer for 110 so no nine inch
