I need to put 2 patches on the top of my rear wheel arches on my T4 VW..they are about 6" x 6" and i can do the job from the top on the inside..My question is can i use my gas torch with brass rods as apposed to MIG and still keep the MOT man happy?.I have a load of brass rods and ime wanting to start using them iff possible...Cheers

Underseal and seam sealer will be a problem in the arches, Mig would be cleaner and quicker. Brazing shouldn't be a problem for the Mot if it's all the way round.

Can't braze structural repairs for the MOT,it's a fail. If the corrosion is in a place that wouldn't be a fail you can do what you want.

Was pondering that earlier thinking about the old 12" from any structural point rule.

so my next logical question is...is the top side of the arches structural? i really dont know

Because that was the original construction method, so if it was brazed together originally you can repair with braze but if its welded originally than it must be a welded repair.

Because they were designed and tested to be constructed that way, you could and should repair like for like, anyway OA and TIG / MIG brazing are not the same process.

Bear in mind that the T4's are galvanised bodies, at least mine was and that was a 02 plate, ex AA.

Seatbelt mounts and suspension mounts.

?Surely they were spot-welded? I do not know enough about brazing of any sort, but I cannot see it being used in mass production in 1990. My LT is 89 and the same construction was used from inception in 75 to retirement in 96. Lots of spot-welding and seam-sealer......a modicum of rust now.

mines a 97-98...was caused by some muppit screwing the plywood panels inside into the top of the arches and the corrosion starting from the tips of the screws...this was when the van was 6 months old too as my partner back then bought it out the wrapper

no, you cant braze your T4, it is constructed from modern carbon steels, the heat from a brazing torch would cause problems at a later date, spot welds or mig are the only aceptable repair methods, and as for mig brazing , its a totaly different technique to gasbrazing, used to join modern body shells table repair methods,

My 2000 t4 is galved as where the wife keeps wiping the side out 3times so far in the same spot it's not rusted and the first time was a few years back

are the rear shock mounts in that arch if so welding only fully seamed

Once the underseal/paint is back in place the MOT man won't be able to tell if it was brazed or migged.
