Can anyone help me find someone, preferrably in Glasgow, who can do some vapour blasting, I have a set of aluminium motorcycle engine casings that I need cleaned and so far I havent been able to fnd anyone to do it.
You know its water vapour with blast media in suspension that they blast with right?
Which means, you have to take the same precautions as if you had it shot blasted or the like to block off every single orifice and opening with something elastic like plasticine or insert plugs, and clean it religiously after, or the blast media gets in the oil after rebuild and destroys everything...
I seen the worlds shiniest gs650 restored once, came into a workshop I worked at with a misfire and poor running. We pulled the camcap and the cam bearings were all scored to death, no lobes on the cams to speak of etc. 300 miles after being restored and as part of that , blasted, quick wash out in the parts washer and then rebuilt with new bearings...
I wash my crankcases in the dishwasher on the hot wash (I have a second dishwasher just for this, since theyre cheap for a battered old one), soap doesnt quite have the same abrasive lingering effects...
You can also take your casings to a blast shop and they
will thoroughly de-grease it in there hot 80 degree tanks and they can then glass bead it.
I have just had my aluminium ford gearbox casing glass beaded and it is like brand new.
I too have a 2nd dishwasher as its a god send to parts cleaning, so when i get all my parts back from my blaster, in they go
