I dont exactly know what has gone on with the position of this photo still no net so have to use my phone.
It was 2.5 murex rods
70 amps
4mm steel beveled
I actually struggle with up hand welding I can never seem to get confortable.
Comments advice all welcome
Thanks for looking and comments dave
Im soooo sorry mate I thought I write it um ive looked at the photo I think its 90 degrees to the left thanks mate again sorry for the poor description
Hold longer at the edge of the bead and whip across the middle and then pause at the other side before coming back across then repeat this will flatten out the welds and avoid undercut.
Resting your arm on something as you move up sometimes helps. I have seen some guys use a scaff bar at a 45 degree angle next to the job to be welded. As the rod shortens they move closer and higher up the work and consequently up and along the scaff bar. Sorry if this sounds unnesceserally complicated. i have seen it and it does work to steady the rod. Maybe there are some youtube clips of people doing it that way. I will have a look.
Also dont try to weld one handed (I know this seems obvious, but so many weld one handed for ages before realizing that holding with both hands is far more stable)
Yes, that works well - use your other hand to steady the rod until it gets too hot/short. I tend to let the rod rest against the top of my left thumb, but you'll find whatever's most comfortable for you.
dont expect too much when learning.people get paid good money to stick weld,if it was easy thered be lots more doing it.all you need to be aiming for is progress.
that is true I enjoy stick welding i just wish i actually could find some one to teach me properly. sadly as my job is all over the place i only get weekends.
