Hi all. I believe that there are a fair few people on here with knowledge and experience of VFDs so I thought it would be a great place to ask
I have a Bristol Hamworthy 4S7 diving compressor which has a 5.5KW three phase Brook Crompton D132SA motor on it. Actually the motor is slightly over sized for the compressor which really only needs 4KW but that is what it came with
Sadly I dont have a three phase supply, but the workshop building I want to house it in does have a 63A 230V supply to it through a nice big 16sq.mm armoured cable so I was thinking that a VFD would be the sensible answer.
The compressor has condensate drains which have to be opened every 15mins running and at the start and end of use so the machine does start off load, there is no residual pressure to fight against when starting
The motor terminal box has access to both ends of each winding - it is wired for delta at the moment as came from a small dive centre which had three phase power,
I have been looking at various VFDs, I am quite happy to take my chance with chinese kit (its a concrete block and concrete roofed workshop separate to my house so not going to kill me if it blows up) but I am confused as to all the options available.
Do I need one which will take 230V single phase and boost to 380V (they dont seem to list 415V) three phase or do I just need a 230V single phase in to 230V three phase out one?
I was looking at 7.5KW VFDs which say they are rated for 10HP motors so give a nice factor of safety but just wanted to pick your brains on which would be the best to go for
Cheers
Jules
