Happy New Year Everybody!
I have found this forum after assessing my vice collection and looking for general information.
I possess the following vices:
BENCH VICES
Record No. 0
Record 1 Ton
Record No. 84 (QR Steel)
Record No. 4
Woden 186B/2 x2
Woden 190/7 (QR Steel)
Fortis No. 10 (QR Steel)
Parkinsons Perfect F8
Parkinsons Perfect 7
Samsonia No. 38
WOODWORKING VICES
Record No. 52½ P
Record No. 50
I also have a number of machining vices for my lathe and jig borer but as I use most of them I'll leave these out of this conversation.
After chatting to to a pal he informed me that with this number of vices I was definitely a collector, although this hadn't occurred to me because over the years I had just sort of, well, er, collected them! I'll get around to posting pictures of them if this conversation develops. My intention is to renovate them and keep a selection, probably the Record No. 0 which I have owned for nearly 60 years, the Record No. 50 which I have owned for around 50 years and the Record No. 84 and Woden 190/7 which fit my workshop and benches. The others I will probably pass onto other people although I'm in no hurry to do so, especially as some of them are in my opinion, works of art! The Parkinsons Perfect F8 for example, is pre-1897 as it has the two-piece fixed jaw with the top half bolted on. I'll certainly consider swaps for other tools or materials but this isn't the reason for this post...
Some specific questions I have are:
- What's the difference between mechanics' vices, engineers' vices, farriers' vices etc...?
- How can I tell what material a vice is made from; I know there's grey cast iron, malleable cast iron and cast steel and as an engineer I understand the properties but I'm not an expert on vices so please don't suggest performing grinding spark tests because surely this information is available already?
- Can anybody please tell me about colours? I've found that Paragon Paints Roundel Blue matches recent Records and the earier, darker ones, similar to some Wodens look like CompAir Broome & Wade Dark Blue. Also, Parkinson Vice Dark Crimson claims to be a good match for, err, Parkinson vices! Fortis is a bit of a mystery and many of the vices already mentioned have second or third alternative colours. Is there any definitive resourse for these colours?
I'm sure I'll have many other questions but let me leave what I've written for now as an introduction. :-)
Regards,
Andy.
