Vice

This came with the lathe I bought yesterday, it has a self centering effect with a right,left hand screw,it is cast iron and the base has a turned spigot, anyone know it's use,origins etc

I'd say it's some sort of drill vice.
On the second picture, is that a ball detent in the spigot?

I don't know. But I'd be interested to find out. I have one too!

No its not a ball indent , it's a scar from a grub screw , it came with what looks like a home made base plate about 8 ins across ,
