Gas lamps?
Tall bikes were invented for lamp lighters in Chicago, much quicker tehan faffing about on foot, cycle up to your lamp on your own height, light it ride up to the next one, etc etc.
No I am not making this one up.

Sharrats in Leigh used to sell a decorative cast aluminium base to take 76mm tube. You made the ladder rack with 27mm tube with 50mm balls welded on the end. They had pre made sheet metal lanterns to add your own glass, you would have had to make a frog to mount the lantern on and away you go.
However none of this information is any good as Sharrats aren't there anymore. I dare say though if you look around the usual suspects Rourkes,Brundles etc I wouldn't bet against them having something similar.

I've been thinking a lot about your lamp stand.
Would you consider fitting some of the new high intensity LED bulb systems in it to light it...... if so take a look at some of these small solar stick lights to get an appreciation of the sort of reflectors you will need to build in the lamp head . A head of four or five led car turn signal units should give a lot of white light and down /outward facing reflectors should disperse it very well.
The LED bulbs last about 10,000 hours or more.
If I were making such a street light I'd surf for pictures and free hand sketch out the details then design my own plans. You can find double cross bar and single bar , fluted base, square base or hexagonal bases etc ...just make sure you have some flexi duct up the post to carry the cables and then make the junction box c/w water proofed transformer in the ground a few feet away .
I'd feed in the flexi duct about 8 inches up, in via a hole up from the base end , stand the base on a precast & set level bit of concrete about 700 deep , make sure the infill concrete will be heavy enough to hold & counter balance the post up in some very strong winds in wet ground.
Perhaps a filled with concrete hole of say 700 x 700 x700 or more

Best give some idea of thickness and weight of what you were playing with , for the home made one will most likely be much heavier than a commercial or plastic , ally or steel one ?
Also , what size postcrete bags did you use .... 10 ,15 , 20 kg etc.

used the 25kg ones. they were steel collums not sure exect weight but two could easily lift them. most decorative street light are just normal ones with an embellishment kit bolted on.

I've got a victorian style street lamp head lying outside my shed, found in a skip a few years ago and still haven't got round to doing anything with it
if you are saying Nivag can have the lamp head, I can relay it from the borders to nottingham
Thanks guys. Have been looking at lots of Victorian lamps posts (some genuine, some retro). Have now got all dimensions to make the complete thing. Just need to find the time. Just finished a portable pedestal for my bench grinder, a Georgian style side gate and posts for the house and have a bike maintenance stand in progress (made from an old office table frame cut up and re-welded). Now keeping a book with welding projects ideas in. Plans for a fairly elaborate mitre saw stand advancing well.
