hello everyone,
i thought i would share one of my first major welding project.
anyone whos had to change supension on a mk1 or 2 golf/scirocco will know how much of a faff it is to set up the camber after unbolting the strut from the hub.
vw will charge somewhere in the region of £280 which is far too much.
so i decided to make a jig that will enable the user to measure the camber before taking everything apart so after it can be set to its origenal postion.
another key feature of this jig is it takes the full weight of the car so the angle is measured with the suspension compressed and allows easy access to the adjuster bolts in this state so the angle can be adjusted.
i started off by cutting the centre of a space saver wheel out so i have something to bolt to the hub.
then getting some 1 1/2 inch box section i made a pivoting arm with the tube at the bottom acting as the pivot point.
then i made the base frome out of 2 inch wide by 10mm thick steel
the bolt through the base had a bunch of greased springs inserted so the bearing is essentially greased sprung steel which 1 is all i had to hand to make a bearing and 2 the tension in the spring seems to take up the slack nicely once compressed.
next i bolted the cut out space saver centre to the pivoting arm with m10 bolts plus welded the top and bottem together to prevent unwanted movement.
lastly i gave it a coat of spray hammerite (worst stuff ive ever used! the brush on stuff is far better!)
and the jig was completed
to measure the angle i use an angle finder which i bought from machine mart, this sits between the upright pivoting arm and the base plate giving you the angle to ground. to make sure the jig is level there are three m6 bolts acting as feet and leveling screws in each corner of the jig.
this is why its important to measure the angle first before you remove any of the suspension.
