waste oils heaters

Anyone got any experience of these waste oils heater me things

looking at getting one-

Theres a load of old heavy heating oil left in some tanks next to my workshop- tanks are 12m long, 6 ft round, 2 off- with about 2ft in the bottom, so a fair bit-

and 2 other tanks yet to be dipped- and a ready supply of oil from a kind farmer-

was looking on fleabay and found a couple

rumour has it you're supposed to register with council/ environment agency.....

but anyone got/ used one- do the smell/ give off hideous smoke?

I've had a thermobile waste oil heater in my workshop for 3 to 4 years now, And apart from the initial purchase price its been no trouble at all.
Mine is a sealed version and gives out no odour what so ever, As for smoke,There is absolutely none what so ever because the way mine works is by dripping oil onto a hot dish thus only burning the vapour/gas out of the oil and leaving the nastiness on the dish.
When you look at the top of the flu all that can be seen is heat,
The only down side with mine is that even on the lowest setting its gets too hot, So even in the coldest freezing weather you end up with the big door up and down to a tee shirt and shorts.

iirc they now must be used outdoors. i wondered about rigging one up outdoors but pass the flue thru the workshop to provide the heat?

cant be of any help with experiences as ive never used one.

the oil supply i can get me 'oily' mitts on is pretty dirty- sediment etc, so i'm wondering if i'll be forever cleaning the thing out-

Not a problem just tip it in, There's a sieve on the top of the tank and just drop any water out the bottom.
Ive burnt all sorts of crap, dirty gear oil ,old engine oil ect no problem, Just keep the machine clean and you will have no grief with it

You need a permit.

have you had any dealings with getting one- is it just a matter of applying and getting or is there a whole rigmarole... jumping through hoops etc

Made my own from a stainless lager barrel, straight drip feed: 1drop of water to 4 of old engine oil. Had to drain off water from the storage drums before waste oil was used. When everything was set right was no smoke or soot, just ash in the bottom of stove. Local council tried to close me down: no epa licence, see! Used stove at home instead. Not as user friendly as ready made ones, which are brilliant.

no idea on the permit but theres a garage in bedford called kempston radiators, they do mot's and radiators but recently they have a monster waste oil heater it maybe worth giving them a ring to ask if they have a permit.

My son has had a waste oil boiler about 5 years now for heating his house, Bought new from Germany It has a pressure fed atomiser but it needs a compressed air supply all the time while running, No smell or fumes of any kind, And as mentioned in a previous reply only thing you see coming out of the stack is a heat haze.
