Wear Plate for rock Crusher

Spent 5 hours cutting this plate last week. Its Hardened manganese Steel Plate. Oxy Acetylene wouldn't cut it . Took 9 refills of petrol for the consaw , and 8 discs. Eventually ran out of petrol so had to finish it with the 9" Grinder.

why have u cut it up and what are u going to use it for?

I had to cut it up so it would fit into the bottom of the rock crusher.

Would a plasma cutter have done it?

I have a 150 amp CEA plasma and it wasnt fit to cut it , its 70mm plate.

That sort of stuff is a mare to cut...i had the misfortune of having to cut a 4" thick impact plate from a Hazemag APK 60 with a 9" and slitting discs...took two days and never used it in the end.

Dear God wyn , The 9" is fairly slow cutting it alright. , The plate that was in this before was hardox and it wore out of it in no time. Hopefully this one lasts a big longer , wouldnt enjoy cutting any more of it Maybe it would be the perfect excuse to upgrade the plasma

It's surprising how little time it takes hardox to wear out when it's getting imact on it compared to the cast manganese steel plates.
We do sometimes cut manganese type steel with oxy/propane but it must be poor quality as it shouldn't be possible to cut it.

Once the cut is started it leaves some sort of oxide layer which is nearly impossible to start a cut on, so if the cut gets dodgy and stops it has to be restarted on a fresh bit of steel.

Its because the oxide melts at a higher temp than the steel. You can add iron powder to the cut and it will make cutting possible. You really need an attachment to meter it.
You can use cutting rods (sticks that cut dont weld)

We used the arcair to cut anything that oxy propane wouldn't work on at the foundry. 1" carbon rods at 1400 amps and 100psi of air to blow the slag away.
