Weird angle iron

I always thought that angle iron had a curved radius in the corner. I asked if I could buy some without the curve as I don't need much strength for this application. I was told it is the luck of the draw.

I had some delivered today - 3 pieces just as expected but one had virtually no radius - a true 90 degrees!!! I want more how do you find it?

You can get bright mild steel angle, all sides, corners and faces are suqare and parallel.

I've noticed different outside radii on seperate lengths of box section in the past

also... is it just the light playing tricks? the piece to the far right looks a different colour to the rest, is it stainless?

Good old bed angle was always great for light duty jobs, is similar still available in mild steel?

Its called square root angle, not as common as the radiused type but not that unusual

Funnily enough when I was carrying this I thought it would be great to make a bed out of it!
I actually have a pallet bed - it is made out of 11 Euro Pallets weighing 33kg each. When I moved house my mates were complaining - asked why I couldn't have just bought something from Argos!

I'm always on the lookout for a frame from a 'busted' bed as an angle source but they seem to be thin on the ground, well...up here anyway.

I remember an old engineer telling me the type of steel that was used for those old angle iron beds... but I forgot now :-(

used to have a pile of it and it was great stuff, ran out a couple of years back and really miss it !

Most of the Vono brand bed frames were re-rolled tram lines that were re-cycled when trams went out of fashion in the '50's and '60's (I used to go to school on a tram in Leeds many year ago !)

The tram rail had a high manganese content that had the property that the surface work hardened in use and hence it's wear qualities are good. However it also means that the angle iron from Vono beds is hard to drill (as it work hardens) and hard to weld (as it cracks)

^^^ that sounds like it could be the stuff (just googled and photos look right, same design/construction)

and I remember it being a pain to drill when I was young (and would run the drill too fast)
