Weird threads?

No, I haven't gone back to wearing flares.....

I'm putting back into commission a small but very solid woodturning lathe. Just fired up the little Brook 'Cub' motor for the first time since the 1950s. Runs beautifully.

It lacks a bowl turning faceplate, and the shaft end I can use is 14tpi x 0.600" (39/64 more or less). Any ideas what thread this might be? I guess it's too much to expect to buy one off the shelf!

It had a grinding wheel on the end so I have a couple of good nuts (ooh matron....) and the thread on the shaft is sound. I could put a small keyway in it and bolt on a faceplate I suppose- but I'd have to lose the nut in a counter bore so I'd need to start with a thick piece, maybe aluminium, not easy to find here in the middle of nowhere.

You’ll have to get someone with a lathe and the capability to cut imperial threads to make that for you

Is this a coronet lathe? Where the headstock swivels for bowl turning?

I might have a spare faceplate. Do you have a picture of the item in question?

5/8" - 14 BSF and a loose fit. Taps available from the usual sources. 14mm tapping drill.

if it's equivelent to a myford ML8 lathe, I might still have the 100mm dia four jaw chuck for it somewhere, will have a look.

Sorry everyone, called away and not online for a few days. No idea of the make of the lathe, very early 50s, nice castings on two solid bars. I'll try to take a photo tomorrow and reply to people.

Ok, photos! I've mounted it on two substantial bits of angle, to which I've added some extensions so that eventually (hopefully!) I can transfer the existing very nicely made chisel rest.

The whole thing is outside under a shed terrace but will be very well protected with a box cover. Things just don't rust in this climate in any case. The downside of living here is that the nearest proper tool shop is 50 miles away and wants 50 euros for a metre of t-link belt- I was hoping to get away without stripping the bearings out. One for my eventual trip to the UK when things calm down.

Yes, I can arrange that. Tool stuff is very expensive here. I bring stuff back for the local farmers on my yearly trip- things like professional drill/drivers are half the price. No doubt customs will end that post Brexit though.

Silicone rubber tubing of a suitable length and diameter and a bit of soft plastic to join the ends will be adequate to power the lathe, like they use on engraver machines, should be able to get from local farmers supply shop, or surgical tubing. Didn't you used to get something like that as emergency fan belts for cars.

Some more progress. Stripped the headstock (is that what you call it on a wood lathe?!) and I can now use an ordinary 13mm belt. The two roller bearings are fine.

My concern is that the one at the projected bowl turning end is smaller (but still quite a size) but that the shaft is both small and a bit thin walled- this end did however carry an 8" grinding wheel, and runs true. A faceplate would have to thread presumably. The wall thickness would preclude a keyway and it wouldn't ne nice to have it on the threaded portion.

Am I just too ambitious wanting a bowl turning facility?
