What kind of welder would normally be used?
Mig looks unlikely as dont think be able to get in close enough between the backplate and indespension type arm
Also....does the heat not go for the rubber in the axle?
I put a set on an old trailer that the brake parts are unavailable for. One bit of advise is don't get the backplate too close to the drum. Fit the backplate in the drum and tighten the adjuster to lock backplate in place then put the drum on and nip it up. You should then be able to get a couple of heavy tacks on the rear to hold it then slacken the adjuster and take the drum off and weld from the outer face.
The rubber will be at the other end of the arm which is also a solid piece of bar so you have to get some serious heat in there to cause an issue. A wet towel will probably be enough to proctect it
I didn't leave enough gap when I first did so I had to cut them off and move them.
The biggest issue is making sure you have the right size for the drums you have.
Cheers....should be able to get the proper plates...have changed bolt on before but never weld on.
I take it they're welded on the outside when new usually?
