Had this welder case in the back of the shed since it blew up. Then an idea popped into my head the other night.

I'm odd I know the family tell me often enough

It's a much more interesting workshop radio than what I could buy and I had the radio and speakers already, the on off button on the welder turns the switched live. Oh and it's very loud great for parties.

I've got a broken plasma, a pioneer head unit & a selection of car speakers, might have a go at making one of those!

What did you use for the 12v supply?

I've a Makita site radio & the performance is underwhelming to say the least!

Hi Turbo, I used a 12v 20a psu from Amazon. But I also added a 12v 7ah battery to retain the settings. It's a bit more complicated than I first thought it would be though as the chassis is negative dc so the psu needs to be insulated from the case. The negative from the battery and psu are both tied together and the positive from the psu and the battery are connected together but both have a diode in circuit to prevent one backfeeding the other. The battery I also wired up to the dinse sockets too so I can charge it without opening the case.

It'll probably only need charged once a month or so as the memory draw is Millamps.




If I did it again I'd probably go with a small Leisure battery and just have it connected to a charger and not bother with direct mains as it would be easier. Then I wouldn't have had to bother with diodes etc. Though in my case as it's for the workshop I wanted to be able to plug it in

I also removed the small fan from the psu and removed the top of the psu case. It doesn't get that hot as it's only working at about 25% of its rated output and I didn't want the fan noise, if it dies at some point I'll have to re think it.

I'd make it so that it uses either Hitachi or Makita 18v batteries so that I can use it cordless as well as mains powered.

Big 12V power supply on the cheap? Find a scrapped PC and pull out the switched mode. Usually needs two wires linking to make it switch on but gives a range of voltages including +5 at something daft like 20A.
