One of my customers have a cherry picker and they need to replace the bushes where the boom pivots at the base of the machine. The pin is seized solid and this is where I come in. Rather than take it to the manufacturer as they have with other machines, they have invested in a hollow jack and have had a boss made that needs welding to the pin . The pin is 2" in diameter and about 18" long. The boss is also 2" in diameter but has been machined At the face to be welded so I have a 'v' when the boss is placed upto the pin. That way I can put enough welds on the boss to ensure it won't tear off when under tension from the jack.
Having never done anything like this before would anyone on here have any input on how to go about welding the boss to the pin, ie, would you pre heat the pin and/or boss due to them being 2" thick or just weld it on and build up the welds to ensure it not coming off?
It is a 35t hollow jack if that helps and once under tension I will be hitting the pin from the other side to assist with getting it out.
Cheers
