welding bench Ideas/Help

Hi All

I have just removed 8 x 2600mm long 60 x 60 box section lengths from the local school, it was been used as roof supports and was removed when an extension was built.

As i like to recylcle i thought they would make a good solid framework for a new welding bench. So i thought rather than me just design a bog standard bench i thought i would ask for the advice of people who have already done it. I am looking for the little things that people have found to be excallant additions to their bench and also the things that are of no use and just get in the way.

I currently have an idea for a standard rectangular frame approxamatly 2000x600mm and then 900mm tall on wheels so it can be moved around the workshop.

So any ideas grately apreshiated before i get

I think i posted a pic up of my table in another thread but cant seem to find it, so here is mine.

its 2m x 1m using 50mm box and a 4mm top

Thanks thats what i am looking to build, how do you find the 4mm top? is it thick enough to bang around on???

I had some bar I used to brace the top, 4 in total and it's pretty solid now.
Saying that there is some flex where the drill is so I'm going to add more box in.

If I make another I will have the the top frame work all on the same level with box section slated to make it solid.
The 4mm top was mainly down to budget, this table cost me £120.
I even added a torch holder from an old suspension spring.

i made mine at home with 50x50x2.5mm box, and a 6mm plate, braced twice underneath.

the one i made at work is 50x50x2.5mm box, and 12mm plate, braced 3 times with box, and it has still bent! all depends what its for e.g home/hobby, or for work. my next one at work will be 20mm plate, and will be braced a LOT of times underneath!

your bench in the picture above looks sweet. nice setup.

I only use mine for car related bits so nothing too heavy duty.
It's covered in engine parts at the minute.
