Welding bench revisited :P

Finally, after months of saving, I finally order a load of stuff from IS&G, so now I can start my welding bench.

I bought a load of 50mm x2.5mm box for the frame and some 4mm sheet to sit on the wooden top.

As its going to be a fairly heavy weight table by the end of it, I wanted to add braked castors so I can move it around. Slight problem with finding a castor with a 50mm square top plate, that can hold any kind of weight, so have to use one with a bigger plate.

What would be the best way to mount the castors:
Seam weld to the base of the leg
Seam to base, then add triangular pieces on either the corners (green triangle) or the midpoints along each side (red triangle)
Seam to base and then shaped plates on all four sides (blue shape)

Oh and does anyone know of a cheap castor seller ?

Can you weld a plate to the bottom of the leg ,then bolt the castor to it?

As Gav says, weld a plate on and bolt the castor to it, all those gussets are unnecessary

Penn Fabrications, or Penn Elcom whichever they like to be called.

4" Blue castors, heavy duty ones, taken around 200kg per castor. Prices vary depending on how many you order.

screwfix have a small range of castors that might suit your needs

I would go for cast steel wheels on the castors - the nylon ones, although can cope with high loadings bounce and can crack if your giving something on the bench some abuse.
Castors are the way forward - we stick em on most things - gives you lots of flexibility in the workshop.

Had a look at the cast ones, unfortunately I am not rich enough to buy them. Was hoping to spend between 20 and 30 quid for 4, which I realise isnt going to get me much.
Which type should I be looking for?

You get what you pay for with castors, I have a customer who likes to free issue wheels to save money, always unbranded cheapo things they don't last long, and I replace them with something like these, the picture I posted wasn't really a recommendation for a nylon wheel, just a fixing method, that was a special application for a food industry trolley, you could use a cheap wheel and have screw down feet for when your using the bench, a bit more fiddly to use though

I have all my wheels sponsored by Sainsbury's and Morrisons.
They make a great base for a welding trolley, or a crate trolley or creeper stool wheels.

They also seem to breed in a hedge nearby.

castors

Our supermarket trolleys are amphibious cos they seem to like being in the local ponds and rivers!

Screw down feet are a good idea sos you can level the bench and use a spirit level as a set up aid
