welding Brass to Mild Steel

Hi all

i need to attach a 21/4" brass ring to a mild steel tube, how can i do this at home? do i need anything special (i only have a blow tourch)

Hello Bob,

how stong a joint is required, as it will also soft solder given a reasonable surface area, what diameter is the flange of the ring? Silver soldering to that size steel pipe will need more than a blowlamp, and you will need silver solder flux. The alternative is pre fluxed rods.

Arrr, you're going to need more than a Mapp torch for that, although you could get by with more than one Mapp torch, but that's not going to be cheap, if you haven't got access to them

Is it fitting in the end of the pipe?

If so could you rotate the pipe in a lathe, or similar bodge, and heat the side as it's rotating, slowly tapping the solder on as it goes round???

just pack it round with broken up fire bricks or grey soft breezeblocks to retain the heat and use blowtorch . nothing fancy needed

Hello Bob,

what I didn't say is that a blowlamp will do soft solder for that job , but you will need to be careful with the steel to get it really clean and tin it before trying to put the two together.

I have a mapp type torch now (freshly borrowed from a college), i a have roll of solder and a bucket of citric acid to clean the two parts in, I will have a go tomorrow and see what happens.
