Welding Brass

Hi all, is it possible to weld brass to steel?
I have a steel gas bottle that i have cut a hole in the top and i would like to install a brass port hole that i have into it.
Any help advice greatly appreciated.

Silver solder would be the one I would use.

I would go with eil's way or soft solder or rivets (depending on what it will be used as when finished). Can be brazed but the brass will melt at the same time as the the brazing rod making it a bit difficult.

The secret is to make sure the two surfaces are exceptionally clean and use a low heat.
I always use propane when welding with silver solder (which seems to be 100 times a day) as acetylene burns too hot for me

I reckon knocking up a mild steel flange with holes to suit porthole, weld flange to bottle, then bolt brass to welded flange......

yes you can with normal copper rods, but you need to use the correct flux. We have to do it all the time when brazing copper/brass/steel in the refrigetation business. Might be cheaper to buy a tub of flux rather than silver solder rods. Also depends on what kind of strength you are needing.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
I have cut a near perfect hole in the gas bottle to take the port hole and i am now thinking of tapping the gas bottle and screwing the porthole to the bottle using high temp sealer to make sure its air tight.
I will post some pictures when i have made significant progress.
Just need to work out how to make the exhaust chimney. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Would it be feasable to weld a few baked bean cans together to make the chimney? Is it possible to weld such material?
