Welding cast

I unfortunately broke the jaw of my Record vice,what i would like to know is can it be welded and if it can how strong would it be.Thanks.

I would heat it up and stick weld it with some good cast rods. Not sure on how long it will hold because i don't know why it failed in the first place. Maybe you can order another one. Just my thoughts...Bob

I welded one up for a mate 5-6yrs ago, per heated, and Tig welded up with 309* preening between welds, then covered with blankets to keep the heat in.

He's brayed the living daylights out it since and it's still together

Thanks for the replys, i broke the jaw trying to bend some pipe with just a bit too much brute force and ignorance.I only have a small stick welder and a mig so it looks like trying the stick.It doesn't matter if it doesn't work,i have another that i am using but it saves tripping over it every time i want to do something.Would it be best if i V the joints to be welded with the angle grinder first and what size cast rods should i use.

yes 'v' the joints to 60 deg'included angle leave a 'land' of 2mm @ the bottom,2.5mm for a root run,then 3.2 for subsequent fillets.

I broke the jaw on my big 6" inch record vice last year , i was disgusted to be honest as it wasn't under any big pressure , i am going to contact record and see if i can buy a replacement. I was told by a knowledgeable chap in a tool shop i should have bought a cast steel vice and not cast iron.

There are two types of Vice.

Malleable; Means you can bray the living daylights out it

Non-Malleable; Means you can't


Most vices are the later, so if you intend do the former make sure it's up to the job

i remember a record advert years ago boasting their vices were made from cast steel & not 'steel castings'. record engineers vices are guaranteed unbreakable.

another point if braying hell out of a vice. bend the metal towards the back of the vice. dont bend it forward its guaranteed to snap at the weakest point on the moveable jaw

I broke a record vice, it was a battered old thing when I got it and I beat hell out of it for years, eventually when I had a length of scaffold on something in
the vice the jaw broke. I chucked it outside and mentioned to the bloke in the tool shop about it when I was looking at the prices of vices[;-)]. I had scored another out of someones skip so wasn't looking for one, just getting a bit of shock therapy. Anyway he said to send it back to record, it was broken battered and manky and by now had sat out in the dirt and rain for a year or more, but I wasn't going to risk the postage. So dropped it off at the toolshop, a few weeks later I got a lovely new vice from Record!
