i just wanted to say hi . i have a question. ive been welding on and off for a number of years now. i do alot of auto. work, especially replacing rusted panels and floor pans. right now im installing mini tubs on a 1969 camaro. my problem is im having alot of eye strain,i have one of those auto darkining helmets with a #11 filter. i recently started wearing reading glasses and i wear them to weld . my book says a #10 filter is reccomended, which number filter should i use? also does wearing glasses affect the filter? ive looked at a couple of differant helmets auto dark and fixed, it seems the fixed ones are the only ones with a #10 filter, the auto darks are #11. im confused, any advice would be much appreciated

Should definately go for a decent adjustable one if you do a lot of welding. If yours isn't adjustable it sounds like a cheap eBay job - who knows what shade a badly made 11 is.
$100 should be enough for one that adjusts from 9 to 13. The books suggest 10 most of the time, 11 for over maybe 6mm steel, and maybe 9 for thin metal for MIG. I run mine near 11 most of the time, but I've no idea if my eyesight is great or if the shade spec of the helmet is slightly off.

I have gotten 2 off eaby. One was $18 (used) and the other was about $54 (Antec).
Look for one with adjustable sensitivity, delay, shade 9-13 and a response time of 1/25,000 sec or 0.000004 sec (speed is important.) Also should meet ANSI standards.
My Antec works great and has had no problems over a year. Bought from seller in Canada called techrecommends.

Hi,
I have a question about auto darkening helmets that maybe someone who owns one/has the instructions may be able to answer.
Does anyone know what happens if the helmet fails to auto darken. Do you end up with arc eye or does the lens still filter the UV or whatever it is that fries you eyeballs?
I fancy the idea of an auto helmet, as I think it may make learning easier but they do scare me a little...

The filter should still screen out the UV but not the intensity so you'd be dazzled but ok. Auto masks are great, I wouldn't be without one. You can pick up a pretty decent one for about £60 or take a chance on an Ebay one for less but it might not meet the relevant safety requirements.
