Welding masks

Hi,
Can someone tell me if there is a hard and fast rule regarding welding helmets supplied by the company.
Our welder is leaving for another job and has been told to leave his mask.
He's arguing with them by saying he has worn it for 7 year and its his personal mask and no other welder will use it after him.

What do you guys normally do?

Cant see the problem, if the company paid for it then its company property, would he apply the same logic to other tools supplied by the company, a helmet is just another tool.

As Paul says, it was bought by the company, therefore it belongs to the company. Simple as that.

Company equipment......end of, he has no claim over it whatsoever.

provided by the company, property of the company. Not sure you'd have the same problem with footwear though!!

As others have stated - ultimately it is company property but also, it's unlikely anyone else would willingly use it.
Whilst I'll happily borrow my mates mask in his garage, I'd want a newly supplied mask in a workplace - I would then be responsable for looking after it ....... so would regard it as personal issue.
In a large company, it would probably be taken without asking, or ok'd by supervisor. A small company may gift it as a goodwill gesture.
Depends on the Company / Boss ...... and on the nature of his leaving

lol I tried to take my Airfed spray mask but wasnt allowed it... like everyone at work said, No one will use it, who wants to use a mask that someone else has sweated / coughed / sneezed etc etc in..

It's personal issues PPE so not really fit to issue to others. I would let him take it with him if he has been fair with you if not don't but unlikely anyone else will use it. Recently three industrial climbers were payed off from another site and they were allowed to take there climbing kit (and records) but were made to sign a disclaimer stating no comeback on the company etc

He's aware its company property but as has rightly been said who is going to wear it after he's had it on his mush for 7 year !
He's not taking it now but can't see why they would want it.
Surely its just gonna get binned by the next welder

Depending on what type of mask it is, I wouldn't guarantee train these cash strapped times they would just " Bin it" I know my lot wouldn't, they would most likely sanitize it and chuck a new sweat band on it, and tell you to get on with it, times is ard......
