Welding Shield Glass

Hi I'm new to the forum. I supose I'm pretty much the same as most new members. I have joined because I need help!
The seat on my golf buggy has broken. So I'm having a go at repairing it myself. I welding a piece of 3/16" plate to the end of a length 1/4" pipe, using a Clarke MIG 90EN with no gas and 0.9mm fluexed wire. I don't seem as if I can get the settings right but my main problem is, I can't see the weld as I'm welding. The glass in the mask (that I bought from Aldi) has number 11 written on it. Is this glass too dark? Is there a lighter one that will allow me to see the weld better and still protect my eyes?

Gasless is hard to see due to all the smoke.

Invest in an auto darkening mask. Both weldequip and DIYwelding sell an inexpensive one forum members have recommended. They have an adjustable range usually 9-13. I normally use mine around 10.

The auto dark makes it much easier when starting as you tend to move the torch when flipping the mask down. You also don't have to constantly flip it up and down as you can see to set up the next weld.

I would PM weldequip or DIYwelding and get one you know is good. Other members here have gotten them the next day via post and are very satisfied.

There was a thread on the Parweld mask.

There are a lot of cheap ones out that are slow responding and give you an annoying flash. Get one that is fast, preferrably 1/25,000th a second.
