Welding sprockets

What would you recommend as the best repair for a couple of cracks that have emerged on the sprocket rims of this Cat loading shovel?

After getting a nice little vee in the area could I do it with a MIG, or low hydrogen rods or dissimilar (6868) rods?

I'd expect that is a rather special steel - it'll be tough and wear resistant - possibly high in manganese, so you probably would need to source appropriate filler rod. A new sprocket would be a far better option.

It doesn't look like a difficult repair, and one that will have been done many times before.

I can't help, as to best procedure but I wouldn't hesitate once told

replacing it is not an option, not only the cost of the part but removing it (both sides) means splitting the tracks and getting a set of hyd. pullers to pull the sprockets off.

Those sprocket rims can be had as weld-on field fits if reqd

hack a bit of a V out around the crack, maybe preheat it a bit, and lay a couple of special of electrodes in. job done chance it ... ..all it will do is fail i cant see that failing injuring a person

I would stick weld it. I have some Premium Nickel-Iron-Manganese Mig Wire but its 40 bucks a lb and that would be pretty costly.

They use 6013 but 7018 can be used. I ran heavy equipment (cats) for 10 years all we ever used was 7018 on everything save the blade which was T1.
