Well here it is...

Knocked this up today for something to do. The welds aren't very good, but they're strong enough.
I kept burning through much to my annoyance, have put this down to wire feed issues and the inability to select a current in between the ranges allowed. Also my novice ability, or inability depending upon how you look at it, lol...

I didn't account for expansion etc. in one of the pieces so it bent. There's plenty of room tho and it'll mean I don't burn my workmate anymore, lol...

I've found a "push" technique better than "pull". Although I still got a little burn through in places. Having my new auto helmet helped loads tho and worked a treat, cheers weldequip!!

Just need to grind/cut off a few of the heavier welds on the bit that gets clamped and I'm sorted...

I was contemplating cutting through the bar that's bent, but for what it's worth I think I'll just leave it for now.

I was considering going on a college night course, as so far I'm self taught and don't think I've done too badly...

Edit. I've got a bit of a sun tan on my arm. Sorry but took my overalls off to go out and didn't put them back on. Seems to have sealed up my psoriasis tho . Hope I learn from this one...

ominiata i have no qualifications for welding, there was always an arc welder about the place if you broke something you welded it back together. worked for a friend for a few years that had a blacksmith shop, he put me straight on a few things etc, but i have been welding for a living for about 16yrs now. bought an inverter that had a TIG option so got the TIG kit and quickly picked up TIG welding. Taught someone to TIG weld, who then got a job working as a semi skilled TIG welder. But for fun and maybe to loose some bad habits i decided this year i will go to college and do the evening classes 9 week courses. going to do part 1 and 2 mig, part 1 and 2 MMA, might even do the gas welding course as well, think there is 9 course in total (3 course for tig, one for steel, 1 for ally and 1 for stainless) just over £110 a course. for me its more as a bit of fun, but no doubt i will pick up some info and tips at college

I did level one MIG at Crawley earlier this year, while my sons were doing arc. The instructor (Paul) is very knowledgeable and will leave you alone until you need help or want to know. You can just call them up, or go along and start. The course is Thursday evening. As a bonus, you get a college car park sticker for about Five months, so you are sorted for shopping.

the Croydon course is a bit advanced for my level of experience but found the Crawley college website and that looks like it might be a bit more suitable. Bit of a trek but it's the closest I've found so far !

To be honest im amazed at how few colleges run welding courses, this seems to have come up on a few threads where people are looking for welding course near them and are unable to find any. I would ask Malcolm to put links or a custom page up that gives info where you can get training, but there are so many thing similar that the forum would have a thousand custom pages and poor malcolm's renault 4 would have rusted away because he would have spent to much time on here and not enough time restoring. Still nothing stopping us from makeing a page with links to various colleges around the country and asking one of the mods to make the thread sticky

I'm all for custom pages with useful stuff that can't be found elsewhere. Had planned to correlate the welding courses, but the information can't be found elsewhere so I struggled a bit and gave up. Kind of waiting for enough courses to be mentioned on the forum to make up a page.

For pages that can be found elsewhere I'll do the links page thing. Unless those other pages are rubbish of course - then we should do them here.

i will start a new thread asking for links to local colleges etc that run welding courses, that way members can do some googling post the links to that thread and then we should have a nice list of welding courses. be easier to put them on a custom page then

I was reading up on that course in crawley, def going to book myself in for it!!!!

was talking to a mate last night who could just about weld, he's done 2 weeks of a course and is now producing very decent welds at college and home.

Darren, when do you start your course?

when i decide to book it firestorm lol. Im only doing it for the certificates. should be an absolute breeze, well i have been welding for about 20yrs now, but there is always some new info that you never knew, that you can pick up. Very much the same as this forum really. Im most likely to do it in january when work slows down a little
