Welsh Dragon

I was recently contacted regards making somebody a wall mounted Welsh Dragon. Jobs might be in the bag, not sure but I decided to have a go anyway. Figuring there are a few patriotic welshmen out there and I liked the image.

So I scaled it up to 125cm long and drew it on a sheet, then began welding the lines to define them.

Looking promising, then I left my camera at home for a couple of days.
Here it is cut out .

And a detail shot of the head.


Plan A is to mount it standing about 70mm proud of the wall. I have welded a structure of strip edge on underneath to stiffen it, the body is made of 1.6mm mild steel.

Now lets see what my customer makes of it.

Nicely cut out,what do you use to clean up those tight edges with,do you move around your cut lines or do you adjust the piece as your cutting?
The lines you welded,i take it you did a bit one end then went to another,did try something like this but found the sheet to warp a litte

The welding? I start at one and work my way around. it does buckle a bit but i have a big rubber mallet. There is a lot of material removed and it seems to go flat with a bit of persuasion. Just remember to sweep the table over before battering it ot you get lumps from debris on the table.
I cut as close as I can with the plasma, then go round with an angle grinder, takes ages and use a die grinder on the bits I cant reach, maybe finish up with a hand file.
