If I'm honest I'm a bit disappointed after reading the title, but the table looks nice.

There is nothing wrong with a "bit of overkill". At least you know that they wont wobble or bend if you put a ton or 4 on the top of it. One thing I would have done, and not sure if you did or not, is welded some pads on the bottom of the legs to spread the load in case you do some serious banging on top. Anyway nice table!

Yes, I agree. With the bottom of the legs left as is, even moderate banging will drive them into the floor, Just like stiletto heels.
