What about this idea for a gas bottle aux receiver ?

I was looking at a drawing of a fire extinguisher the other day and it got me thinking.

Remove valve from a propane bottle and replace with a 3/4" Tee that is this way up I-
Add 3/4" to 1/4" reducing bush to the top.
Take a short length of 1/4" pipe (say 6" ?) and thread around 1.5" at one end and normal small amount at other.
Screw longer threaded section inside the Tee and then add elbow & tap on top.
On short threaded section use a reducer to then allow a length of 1/8" pipe to reach to bottom of bottle.
Use the side of the Tee for air in / out.
That way air pressure would push any water from bottom of tank up the 1/8", then 1/4", pipe through the elbow and tap to allow it to be drained without having to invert bottle.
Obviously it wouldn't get 100% of water out.

So what is the opinion of this idea ?

Only problem with that is an upside down bottle isn't as stable as a correct way up bottle. Also "connections" and any gauge would be at floor level rather than eye level.

Used to 4 of the 47Kg ones on a wall upside down, manifold joining them 2inch drop pipe with tap for drain, take off at end of manifold.
hung them about 6 ft above floor no floor space wasted , mate had them in the roof space in a lower building with the drops coming through the ceiling

Vertical tanks can't be found cheap or free hence the use of gas cylinders. Point me to a 100 litre vertical cylinder that is a reasonable price and I'd be delighted.

If you use the large propane cylinders, the top collar on them is merely bolted on. It would be no big task to make a leg assembly to bolt on. Easy enough to make an extension pipe for connections and gauges and have it higher up too.

Careful.. I've yet to find one that bolts on. I think out of the 15 or so cylinders I've got only one is bolted on, and that's a 15kg cylinder.

Have you any of the large 47kg, (if memory serves), ones? The small to mid size canisters usually have welded on collars, but the large ones I've seen all have bolt on collars.

The 47Kg Calor I have is welded on.

Which I shall double check tonight. But from memory all of the cylinders I've got in at the moment are welded on, bar one, which again if memory serves me, that's an Alto cylinder.

You can weld legs into the welded collars.
@normspanners had an elegant idea for a propane tank as an air receiver that does not pick up any water from the tank and allows it be drained easily, I'll try to find the chicken sketch.

If you've got three bottles you could fasten them together in a triangular formation, they should be stable enough upside down.

What about if you want it freestanding , away from a wall, like me ? My intention is to have it behind garage (several feet away) so air assessable for when I'm working outside.

They're free. Also, I've never encountered a gas bottle that is hiding rust, which is a serious risk on a used receiver.
Propane ones have a convenient and reliable valve built in as well.

yea gas bottles are free and have a thicker wall
