what are these clips called?

a friend is after one of these clips for some fishing reels but ive no idea what th are called, its a washer with teeth on then inside, when pushed on it grips and cannot be pulled back off

It's wonderful how many names 'spring up' for the same thing. You can find them under that title, but originally called Spire clips, after the manufacturer I believe.
Probably an Americanised version.

Now why do us oldies refer to self tapping screws as PK screws?

I remember using PK, usually say self-tapper now. Google says it's derived from the original manufacturer's name - Parker-Kalon.

Some of these other names are generated because an original idea which has a patent attached to it gets modified to overcome patent infringement. Spire clip becomes star fastener, star clip etc.

PK (tapits) has a specific use to avoid scratching surfaces with sharp pointed screws I believe.

The original Philips screw had its point angle reduced to become the Pozi drive and I think the Japanese then took the point off to overcome patent problems. This was in early days so a bit fuzzy now.

It gets annoying when you go to take something apart, only to find you haven't got the Bristool, square, triangular, security torx or forked flat blade to undo the thing and end up having to bodge something up.

I must say, I've yet to find need of a Bristol spline key, and I've had a set since 1984.

Do you know what size he requires, if its for a 4mm shaft give me a shout and i can pop a few in the post, unfortunately its the only size we use.

You know why Seadog. You don't have an IBM golfball typewriter to repair. Or a Remington golfball typewriter.The golfball was Remintons baby but they licenced it to IBM too. Bristol's were much better than Torx or Allen
