What does bespoke mean?

E.g:

A one off piece designed & made for a client / situation.

VS

A pre-concieved design made to work for a specific location.

I think it could be either. To me, "bespoke" signifies custom-made / one-of-a-kind.

A staircase that was delivered to site and bolted in wouldn't be bespoke but, if it had to be substantially altered to fit, then it could be considered bespoke. If you took it away would it fit in another site without modification?

Bespoke and commissioned are usually understood to be the same thing by the general public, one offs for a specific customer* and location.

*Often repeated for someone else because it made you such a nice earner and the original customer will never find out.

I think that can still be bespoke. I guess we're missing some context, though - if you want to sell a product or service as bespoke then you're likely to be on safe ground as long as there's some element of uniqueness about it.

Bespoke I would say fits your first example., the second example surely is something that is being adapted to suit an alternative requirement.

I always understood to mean....... " made to order ". It doesn't necessarily mean one of a kind, there could be as many made as needed for a purpose, such as a special design for window guards for a house.

A bespoke suit is tailored to fit. Doesnt mean you will never see another suit in the same cut and colour.
