What Else Do I Need To Begin Spraying (Comp, Gun, Hose)?

I've decided upon the following (cheap) setup, however prior to hitting the 'buy' buttons, is there anything I am missing to begin spraying?

Stanair 14CFM / 3 HP Compressor
3/8" Hose (incl. BSP fittings)
Iwata AZ3 1.8mm Gun (7.5 cfm)

Do I need any other connectors between the gun/hose and comp/hose?
Is a regulator at the gun necessary? If so, which regulator would fit?
Do I need a water syphon? If so, how does this connect (i.e. do I need more hose?)?

You will need a water trap/filter. That would need to be connected to the reg of the compressor in some way, preferably direct not through hose, so you will need pipe fittings and adaptors.
You will also need adaptors to screw into the hose fittings to allow it to connect to the trap/filter outlet, which type depends on the connector you select for the outlet, eg, PCL.
Typically there would be a male on the hose to connect to the filter outlet and a female at the other end to connect to the male on the gun.
The regulator on the compressor is fine to set the gun working pressure.

How about this water filter? Or is that a bit too cheap?

Too small, look for at least 3/8", preferably 1/2".
Fittings and adaptors can be a bit tricky to sort out. It all depends on what the thread is coming off the reg on the compressor.
The quick release adaptor off the filter outlet just needs to be whatever your preference is, Euro or PCL tend to be most popular, and threaded to suit the filter thread size, eg, for 1/2", just get an adaptor threaded 1/2" BSP male. Machine Mart keep this sort of thing in stock if that helps.

Does that mean that the hose I found is also too small at 1/4"?

Actually yes, 1/4 is too small. For a spray gun go for 3/8". The reason for going 1/2" before the hose is to minimise restriction on delivery.

I've found this 3/8" hose and amended my opening post.

In terms of the regulator, the following two are the only one's which I can see on the bay. I'm not sure if the first one even filters out water (or do ALL regulators filter water?) and how it connects. The latter seems to be a 3/8" to 1/4" which too is no good, yes?

Trust me, you won't be spraying at 40 bar pressure, thats 600 PSI !! 20 bar working is 300 PSI, thats twice the max presure of the compressor so it aint gonna be a problem !
That hose has taper male fittings so whatever you screw onto the ends will need to be female threaded.
Of the 2 regs Bergen one looks the best and is a filter too.

Will the Bergen filter out water as well? It doesn't mention anything about being a water trap?

What type of paint will you be spraying? 1.8mm is an awful big setup, usually used with high build primers and the like.

Morrells Pre-Cat Primer & Lacquer. Spraying MDF. If the tip is too big, can I not just reduce the flow at the trigger?

Filter regulators do take out a large proportion of water, enough for your purposes. The only way to take out more is use a dryer, but they V expensive !

I once had to spray MDF, the only problem I remember was the edges NEED to be SEALED well or you'll find they soak up paint like a ba*Tard, pva worked quite well.
Several coats and sand the sticking out fibers off once dry between coats....

Built a car that had a mdf body......Never again!!!!! panel sufaces were fine but the edges took a lot of work! (Huskey Jeep)

Could you not contact the paint company and ask what their nozzle/tip recommendations are for air spraying their product, paint company's normally provide a tech sheet.

Some of them are auto other manual, auto drain themselves when there is no pressure, manual you just open a valve at the bottom of the bowl.

They recommended 1.8 as this would be ideal for the basecoat. And I can then limit the size (by turning the "needle knob" on the gun) for the lacquer if required and too much paint is coming out. Does that sound about right?

If thats their recommendations then you cant go wrong, I have the AZ3 HTE2 the gun that came after the one you have posted and i also bought some extra needle/tips for it from spraygunsdirect, they are not that expensive really I think I paid around the £15 for a needle and tip.
