What is it and how do I use it?

It’s obviously for some kind of rotary operation- currently with a 48 tooth gear.
It’s a bit stiff to turn- and I can’t yet loosen the chuck, but I have a need of something like this for work holding today.

I can’t imagine what the assembly on the other end to the chuck does. The two shafts at the top are keyed, so presumably some sort of gearing?

Recently i have found need for a diving head an di have one, although it has parts missing. I believe its a Universal diving head. I have been looking to try to ID what type it is so i can replace the parts. I THINK, it needs a worm crank with a head. and parts to connect it ot he gearing. I...

The assembly on the other end is to add more gears to, so you can 'compound' the gearing much like using the change gears on a lathe to cut different threads. Only in this case using them to obtain more divisions than obtainable with a single gear.

A "banjo" is the part holding the gears.

If you look up a universal dividing head that will give you a better idea of what it could be used for.

As it stands it's setup for differential dividing but you need a set of gears.
