What i've made this weekend

I've taken on a stall at Tattoo Jam in August so i'm spending all my spare time making more bits and pieces to sell. I made these this weekend (i've actually made 2 of the hearts and another 6 have been shaped) The body is made from m10 nuts which I brazed together with them being galved. The face needs a bit of tidying, I got a bit giddy pouring the lips and nose and got more on than I needed some of which I like but the eye socket definitely needs sorting. The lips and nose are made from some old copper pipe melted down with a small amount of aluminium and borax added to the molten copper, which makes it look a bit like bronze.

I think you should be thinking higher end than a stall, the face especially in the right designer type shop would be very costly to buy, they usually take at least 50% commission but the prices they can get still make it very worthwhile.

I've tried a few galleries and not had a lot of luck so far, tattoo conventions were suggested by my tattooist last year and after going to Leeds tattoo Expo last week I could see where he was coming from. My target for the big sculptures is the tattooists themselves for their studio's, they've got money most charge £50 - £100 an hour and they are used to people paying hundreds sometimes thousands for their art. It's also been organised by a national magazine so I should get a fair bit of publicity off it. I'm not going to give the statues away and if they don't sell I won't be too upset i'll just have to investigate other markets.

Where were the galleries you tried? Londons west end would be my guess at having clients with the cash those "works of art" deserve.

Do you have a mannequin that you lay the pieces over before brazing them together?

Couple of years ago I ( and the mrs ) made a plaster cast of her full frontal! She didn't half swear when it came to remove it as there was a few stragglers caught in it!!

The plan was to make a figurine out of twenty mil punchings, but I've not got round to it yet, one day though!

top work, would love to have the imagination to look at a box of M10 nuts and see that sculpture appearing... same as when there was someone on here with a pile of rusty old spanners that made sculpture too.. all incredible stuff.
I appreciate the art of others, but have no abilities on that front at all..I might be able to build it, just don't have the "vision" to see what artists see, to me it just looks like any other box of spanners / nuts etc...

There is a market place for hand made arty stuff called Etsy. A friend of ours markets bespoke leather stuff through it. Worth a look.

This is because your an engineer, we visualise with straight lines, logic and perfect symmetry, art has none of these.

Addjunkie - Definitely, can sketch technical drawings all day long, to infinite detail, measurements / developments etc, visualizing 2D into 3D and back again. Technical subjects no problem, but ask me to "draw" a portrait / landscape or suchlike, total waste of time, I'm hopeless. Same as with some of the modern art, sometimes I haven't a clue what I'm looking at, wife reckons I'm analyzing it too much; looking for some meaning or something profound, not just appreciating it for what it is.

I do not sell her the piles of melted drinks cans.

Mostly Leeds but also the Saltbox in Helmsley.
