what sand???

just bought myself a Sealey Shot Blast Grit Sand Blasting Kit with Gun SB993.
I decided to give my new to me car rear drum a good clean.
the local powder coat gave me some shot grits or what ever you call it.
I used it once and my compressor gave up but it was on its way out anyway so I've just bought a new one but a little bigger.
the grit he gave me weighed a ton! it started to rain the next day and where ever the grit landed it rusted!despite me hoovering it up.
it was all over the place mainly on my windows and doors.
it rusted like hell ,spent nearly all day cleaning the ****** up.
no idea what it is..just checked google and it could aluminium oxide??
what might be best to use for cleaning brake caliper's and a little bit of sill work.
and doesnt leave rusty mess all over.

It would have been chilled iron and does rust like there's no tomorrow.

Go for bog standard J-Blast Supafine.

Using silica based sands is illegal per-se in a business environment (apart from a couple of specialized applications) and you could be prosecuted under Health and Safety at Work regulations for doing so.

the only suitable stuff will be j blast superfine using a suction gun . dont expect too much as it will be slow and messy . realy a pressurised pot is recomended and a decent cfm to get anywhere fast if u want to borrow my pressurised pot to try u are quite welcome pm me

silica sand is what sand blasters use,its also used for block paving,its sprinkled in between them to stop them moving about,if you mix it with a certain oil and blow co2 through it,it sets solid like a rock,thats how I used to make moulds in the iron foundry.not illegal.its the finest sand around.

If it's the same as the kiln dried sand that's used for block paving it is illegal to use it for blasting with compressed air in a business environment, due to risk of silicosis. I've seen words printed to that effect on bags of kiln dried sand and the HSE guys who visited me were very keen to know what I was using in my blast room, they made it clear as day that kiln dried sand is illegal.

It can apparently be used on large outside structures such as bridges, that may include buildings, I'm not sure, although a guy who was blasting a house near me did say he wasn't allowed to use it on houses.

Also it's not a particularly good abrasive either!

it might be illegal,but it doesn't stop people from using it,as it goes through the gun better.i don't condone it,but it happens.

I'm intetested in that m8,I'd like to give it a try,was it raw or boiled linseed oil?? I'm surprised that it works as you usually have to bake linseed oil sand to harden it & co2 sand is usually mixed with sodium silicate then innoculated with co2 to set it in the foundry.

when I worked in the foundry,when I was sixteen,my boss give me the job of mixing the sand for the moulds,as far as I can remember,it was silica sand,linseed oil,and something else,like bentonite or something like that,packed into a moulding box,spiked with a long piece of steel ,then co2 gas was blown in the hole for about two minutes.im fifty one now,so might have something wrong.

O-k thanks for that, [building me hopes up there for an easy way out] yes sodium silicate's for co2,linseed oil's for baked cores, bentonite clay's for making/re-constituting greensand,the old memory plays you up as we get older!!

We used to make sand cores by mixing with a highly volatile clear viscous liquid (that I can't remember the name of ) and gas it with Amine to set it, then it would be baked in an oven.
