You'd normally go for 10 or 11 for most DIY arc welding. Depends on the amps, the mask and your eyes. If it seems a bit bright go a bit higher, and if you can't see anything turn it down a little.
Do the controls on welding masks actually change a huge amount then? Either im blind of the Optrel masks ive been using are naff, I seem to just set it on the fastest time to change and either medium or the lightest shade, other wise I find I cant see the weld area very well...
Depends on the mask - mine is an esab which uses optrel lenses. I find I'm turning it up about a notch higher than I would expect - I'm on 11 for thin mig work and up to 12 for arc. The shade adjustment does make a difference on mine. The speed control is something different.
mine is on 11 ATM but when i stop welding and the weld is red hot the mask flikers back an forth do they do that or am is there something else to change?
thanks caz
