What size log splitter pump

Hi I intend to fabricate a log splitter I have a 10ton ram I know a bit over the top but it's what I've got. I also have a Honda gx 160 5.5hp engine but wondered what gpm hi low pump I would need to suit this ram and engine size. I don't want the cylinder to move really slow any help would be great. Thank you

As above your engine is a little under powered for the 7 tonne & well under powered for the 10 tonne.

Either speed or pressure will be below par dep on what you use.

A twin speed pump would help with that but cost more.

IE fast till it hits the log then power to split.

Well my processor has a GX390 & is available with 8 tonne split but also powers other things.

The split speed reduces if you have the higher power.

About 35 years ago my Uncle, who was a plant fitter for Pearls Drainage, built a log splitter and sawbench combo. It used a mini engine and gearbox driving a JCB pump. The pump ran whatever he plugged in, it was incredible seeing it smash logs!
Wish I had some pics/video of it!

i have a hydraulic pump not doin owt someone on here wanted it then never bothered its brand new

If you want to speed things up fit a load sensing variable displacement pump.They can double or treble the no load flow rate and reduce flow when splitting, a few quid more but well worth the extra shekkles IMHO.

GX160 will absolutely fine with a Hi/Lo pump, sure if you plan on running it all day every day then you make want something bigger.

I'm pretty sure my pump has only got a GX140 on it and it works fine and it isn't a Hi/Lo. A ram isn't a 10t ram, it all depends on the pressure.
