whats the best exhaust gasket from these 2

been using the first style downpipe gasket from the motorfactors only for them to rust away and blow in no time , decided to pay up for a genuine one as per pic 2 , was surprised its just embossed thin stainless , thinking once you pinch the bolts up its no more than a sheet of metal there

never seen the second style , whats the forums thoughts , fit for use ?

Only place I see the top type is in egr valve or cooler parts of the exhaust

The top ones are the same make up as mazda use to use in the 90's.Bottom ones look like the ones you get in a cheap air cooled vw engine gasket set.I'd prefer the top with a little of the silicone exhaust sealer.

top one is £2.75motor factor...last one rotten in 6 month

2nd is genuine ford £13 , just a bit miffed it doesnt seem to have much sealing ability

The Ford one will be exactly as used at build, the only difference as 8ob alludes to is age-related corrosion. a small amount of exhaust paste will fill in any pitting on the mating surfaces. The gaskets are one-shot deformable, similar to that used on EGR's etc but without the Teflon coating. I'd never use the one in your first photo - looks too fragile.

failed because its rusted away to nothing , not a warped surface

thought the genuine one ought to last better

Later Rover V8 exhaust manifold gaskets are of the stainless shim type.

The stainless acts like a spring rather than squashing.

They are very effective and durable.

on the early polos the mk2 / mk2f was the first one and the mk4 used the second one, I've used them both on my cars, and Ive reused the second one in the past without issues.

Second one is a more durable design and OE in most cases.

When I rebuilt my engine a few years ago I used an aftermarket gasket kit that had these metal exhaust gaskets. The OEM were the old style fibre gaskets.

So far no bother with the new style but I've only done a few thousand miles.
