Does anyone know what the difference is between towing sockets,ive seen 12N and 12S but i dont know the difference? or is it a matter of choice?

I did a few searches and seemed to get more confused! so i hope ive got this right,if im only towing a trailer i need just a 12N but i need both for a caravan to keep fridge etc running?
there's a relay that you can get to attach to your car battery that disconnects the caravan fridge when the car engine is turned off. It reconnects /after/ the car engine has been re-started.
You can get by without it but the fridge will draw about 7 amps, possibly more for a big one, and will place a drain on the car batttery if you stopped at a services for a few hours.
Also, it allows/forces you to run a separate feed from the battery (I used 2.5 T&E mains cable) with it's own fuse at the battery.
As well as full 12n road electrics on my van I have wired up a (grey) 12s socket to suit my needs. So on my large open trailer there's 2 plugs, all the grey one does is work the reverse lights I've installed. On my box trailer there's 2 plugs again, and the grey one does reverse lights, interior LED strip lights and the 55w halogen worklamps above the ramp
But yes the grey (12s) sockets are normally for reverse lights and fridge etc on caravans
Aye but it was close though Simon, the wires were ripped out of the plug! The plug wasn't left in the socket though and I couldn't find it on the verge anywhere - had to invest in a new one for my extension lead
Almost found a replacment carvan in the paper the other day, open plan, fresh paint, new lamiate flooring etc. After a few minutes on the phone I said "so is it road legal ready to go then?" and he replied "oh no, you can't take a static on the road"
Should've said it was a static in the ad then
