The filter foam for my fish tank is exactly the type I need but it has a hole in the middle but it doesn't go all the way through. If I used this foam would it suck to much air in.

the filter isn't used to restrict air, it is used to clean air. If your using it on an engine the air intake is governed buy other factors. When i had my xr3i turbo i didn't run a filter on it, just a bit of stailnelss gauze as there wasn't enough space in the engine bay to get a filter on the turbo

I can remember sticking a k&n filter on my capri and it sucked to much air in so I didn't want to use the foam from my fish tank just in case it sucked to much air in and did something to the air compressor. Would anyone have any more links for where I can buy a filter from as I tried the link from tig paul but they haven't got back to me yet.

It cannot suck too much air in. Simple as. Any mechanical device merely takes in and consumes what it uses, no more no less. You'd have to physically pressurise/compress the air for it to take in excess for its needs.

Provided the filter material covers the points between inlet and outlet with no gaps, you're peachy.

What might be confusing you is that a K&N filter may breathe more easily than the manufacturer's standard pan filter. This can be exascerbated (sp?) by flashy chrome air filter housings. This extra breathing ability is generally a good thing, however, it may throw the mixture calibration out as there is now a greater proportion of air in it. This is generally seen as a bad thing and requires modifications to the fuel system to compensate, unless you like ventilated pistons.
